I'm currently in Switzerland. Believe it or not, it felt a bit strange. I kind of miss London. Where is home? Where do I belong to? Can this change in such a short time? Am I wrong?

Swiss National Day

August 01, the Swiss National Day. We pimped up our apartment with flags and other Swiss Cross stuff. And we had traditional Fajitas for dinner ;-)

How to buy furniture?

We still need a couple of items for our apartment. A friend of us recommended Argos as a good option to buy furniture. So we headed for Westfield Shopping Mall at Shepherd's Bush (a massive shopping mall!!!) where Argos is said to be located. We expected something big, IKEA style, but couldn't find a large furniture store between all the Gucci's and alike.
When the Argos sign finally catched our eyes this turned out to be slightly disappointing!

It was a maximum 200 square meters and what you can basically do is flipping through a catalogue and jot down the stock number of any item you wish to buy. Once paid it's delivered to your home! Well, they have a couple of small size items on stock, so we luckily got away with buying a drawer inlay for cutlery...

Have a picnic

I've seen it on the day of the Royal Wedding, people are doing it on Henman Hill while watching Andy Murray loosing another epic semi final, and we even did it ourself in Hampstead Heath last weekend; the picnic.

Olives, crackers, vegetables, dip sauce, bread and a bottle of white or sparkling whine - yes, the Londoners certainly have their 'dolce far niente'!

Left or right?

You may all know that the British drive on the wrong side of the road. While I could cope with that I have a hard time understanding where to walk or stand when using the tube. It seems logical that when walking in the tunnels that you have to 'keep left' (although it's usually a complete mess with people walking everywhere).

On a two lane motorway the British would (hopefully) overtake on the right lane, hence, left for slow and right for fast.
Now when using the escalators why do we have to stand on the right and walk on the left?

That's so Swiss!

My girlfriend and I, both Swiss, recently moved to London for a two year assignment within our company. In the first days and weeks my boss often labeled me 'Swiss' for things I said or did. Hence, I thought it might be best to do a self reflection before starting to explore this new city. Luckily, we got the perfect book as a farewell gift: 'Swiss Watching, Inside Europe's Landlocked Island' by Diccon Bewes. It was great fun reading and I have to admit that I learned quite a bit about me being Swiss. After this I feel ready for yet another international adventure. Here is my London view...
